In 2018, a group of friends got together to start planning a convention, thinking it would launch in 2020... and we hit a dozen roadblocks, not knowing why it was so hard to make forward progress. Then Covid-19 struck, and we thought, "Oh, huh, maybe that was why."
Coronavirus is unfortunately endemic now, but with vaccines and masking and everyone being better about hand-washing, some of us reconvened in the fall of 2024 to carefully look into the idea once again. What could we do to prevent the previous roadblocks? How could we create an event planning organization designed from the ground up to do things right from the very start?
First, we needed a vision - of what we wanted, what we could grow into, and where we could start.
We needed to recruit just enough people to get the focused, early work done, who were in complete alignment with that initial, core vision.
We needed to organize all the thousand steps to get from here to there into a sensible, responsible order.
We needed to learn how to set things up as an accountable, non-profit organization (Bylaws! Board of trustees! State and federal requirements!) and apply for 501(c)(3) status -- not as an afterthought, but as a foundation to build on from the very start.
We've been quietly laying these foundations for a while, and are ready to launch into social media outreach, committee volunteer recruitment, and securing a venue.
We are taking the dream and making it real!
